Substitute Teacher Information

How to become a Substitute Teacher:

 

Complete a Substitute Teacher application.  Applications are available on our web-site at www.cgelem.k12.az.us or at our District Office located at 220 W. Kortsen Rd., Casa Grande, AZ 85122.  Be sure to answer all questions and sign the releases and the application.

 

Individuals with a high school diploma or G.E.D. may apply to be a substitute teacher.   Applicants possessing a bachelor’s degree can be hired as a Substitute Teacher.  Applicants with a high school diploma or G.E.D. may be hired as an Emergency Substitute Teacher, if the Superintendent declares an urgent need. 

 

To begin work as a  substitute teacher you must:  

  1. Possess a valid emergency substitute², substitute¹, provisional or standard teaching certificate, from the Arizona Department of Education
  2. Possess a valid fingerprint clearance card issued by the Department of Public Safety
  3. Pass a complete background and reference check
  4. Have a screening interview

 If you are called for an interview, you will need to submit:

  1. A valid Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card or, if you have applied for one, the yellow copy of the application, or to apply for a fingerprint clearance card, a $69.00 money order or cashier’s check payable to AZ DPS.
  2. A valid Substitute Teacher Certificate or, a completed application³ and a $60 personal check, money order or cashier’s check payable to AZ Dept. of Education
  3. Your official college transcripts evidencing a bachelor’s degree (substitute), or high school diploma , G.E.D. (emergency substitute).

¹ Substitute Certificates are valid for six years. 

 

² Emergency Substitute Certificates are valid only for the specific school year and expire July 1.  In order for the certificate to be renewed, the certificate holder must submit an official transcript with 2 semester hours of additional academic courses taken after issuance of the prior emergency substitute certificate.  Individuals with 30 or more credit hours will be exempt from completing additional courses upon providing official transcripts to the Arizona Department of Education.

Substitute certificates¹² may be used for substitute teaching only and cannot be used to fill a vacancy occurring in a regular position.  A substitute certificate is valid for 120 days of substitute teaching in the same school each school year.

The Human Resources Office can assist you with completing the certificate and fingerprint applications.


 

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

 

Can I specify the days I am available?

Yes, you will be asked about your availability if you are hired*.  Later, if your availability changes, you can notify the substitute coordinator of the changes.

 

Can I only work at certain schools and/or grades?

Yes, you will be asked your preferences at the time of hire*.    Changes can be made to the substitute coordinator.

 

Will I be able to work 5 days a week?

A substitute teacher is not a full-time position with the District.  Therefore, there is no guarantee of the number of days to be worked. 

 

When will I get called for jobs?

Most calls are made between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.  Using our automated system SubFinder you will be able to review and accept jobs in advance.

 

What is a substitute teacher’s work schedule?

Elementary Schools:   7:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

Middle Schools:             8:15 a.m.-4:00p.m.

 

Will I need to write lesson plans?

For day-to-day jobs you will not be required to write lesson plans.  Teachers generally leave detailed lesson plans in the classroom.  You are expected to follow them to the best of your ability.   If you cannot locate the lesson plans, please advise the school principal and seek direction.  You may need to use a few 5- or 10- minute time filler activities on these days.

For long-term assignments you will be required to complete lesson plans. You will participate in grade level meetings where lesson plans are discussed and prepared and attend school staff meetings.

 

*Note:  By limiting your available days, specifying certain schools and/or grades you will limit the number of substitute teacher opportunities.
